OS | Retail Store

Let's go deep intounderstanding how HMI and ambient systems can shape up the shopping experience of the future

Read

In this article, we delve into the specifics of a retail store, analyzing how HMI and ambient systems can enhance its operations. We consider the various entities involved and their respective goals, as well as the intricate interplay between diverse OSs and ambient systems. Finally, we emphasize the importance of human staff in a futuristic retail setting, highlighting their unique role in maintaining a seamless customer experience.

Clothing Store | Retail

We will talk about the plausible use cases of OS in a retail setup.

Entities Involved

  1. Customers & their humanOS → Their objective is to have a pleasant shopping experience. For the same humanOS shall try to get as much information as possible from spaceOS, and get redundant tasks done when they enter a store. humanOS shall also share required data with spaceOS in order to make the experience better.
  2. Management & staff, and their humanOS, which we can also name as staffOS for this note. Now, the humanOS (staff) is working to achieve the space’s objective. That is to improve customer shopping experience and improve the business.
  3. Clothing store, its digital and physical systems. And associated spaceOS. spaceOS is the unit which is connected with different physical and digital systems of the clothing store. spaceOS is working to help management to achieve the objective, and assist customers in the process.

Objective

  • Clothing Store | spaceOS, and humanOS (staff) -> 1) Enjoyable shopping experience for its customers. 2) Increasing revenue, profits, and decreasing costs.
  • Customers | humanOS -> 1) To have a pleasant, easy, and efficient shopping experience. 2) To find and purchase clothing items that meet their needs and preferences.

spaceOS - humanOS (Customers)

  1. Enabling personalization → By humanOS sharing the required information with spaceOS.
~ They can enable a personalized shopping experience for the customer by displaying and suggesting the apparel of their preference. And something that they want to purchase now.
~ Dynamic pricing can also be designed in order to give total personalized experience to the customer. By dynamic pricing, we mean pricing tweaked by spaceOS to maximize the chances of purchase.
~ spaceOS, utilizing the ambient systems, can place the on-display clothes with user’s existing photos/wardrobe to help them make the purchase decision.
  2. Insight Creation → spaceOS, and humanOS can interact within themselves to come up with more insights.
~ Imagine knowing the collection of a new store before going there. Can save big time for both the store and customers.
~ Now, if a customer is in a store, the conversation between humanOS and spaceOS can enable customers to know if there is apparel in the store’s inventory that might be of interest to the customer.
  3. Feedback → spaceOS can interact with humanOS, and via this directly with humans to get feedback on the shopping experience.
  4. Customer Service → Any customer service, call or chat request can be handled by spaceOS directly. And can be further raised to staff and their OS if escalation required.

spaceOS - humanOS (Staff)

  1. Staff management → spaceOS, based on various parameters can help management plan the staff shifts, and their presence across the floor.
~ Shift planning based on footfall prediction.
~ spaceOS can alert staff to give attention to users who might need it, and are plausible to purchase the apparel if given proper attention. Which type of staff should be serving the customer and how can also be suggested.
~ spaceOS can also nudge staff to greet repeat customers, and serve them in a tailored way.
  2. Inventory management
~ spaceOS can assist staff and management by helping them plan the inventory based on the preferences of people who visited the store in the past.
~ It can help in choosing the suppliers. spaceOS can also interact with spaceOS of the suppliers to figure out the best inventory to be purchased.
~ It can also plan logistics in order to minimize the costs.
  3. Store design → spaceOS can assist staff in planning the store design much more efficiently.
  4. Theft alert → spaceOS via CCTV footage can identify theft related incidents and alert staff.
  5. Interaction with management → spaceOS can interact with the management via their OS to help take daily decision.
  6. Marketing
~ spaceOS gives management the capabilities to design their marketing campaigns on the fly which can ultimately help in achieving the business objective.
~ This includes giving discounts on different apparels, combo of apparels, referral ideas, or any other method which is designed keeping in mind the customer and their details.

spaceOS - spaceOS

  1. spaceOS of any store can interact with OS of a supplier in order to order the best inventory, and manage its logistics.

Ambient Systems

There will be different ambient systems involved in the entire space. We will talk about the few below:

  • Aisle Display Screen → For example, a screen in the aisle of a clothing store could recommend products to customers based on their preferences, as determined by the store's spaceOS and the customer's humanOS. This could make shopping more efficient and personalized, while still allowing the customer to retain control over their choices.

Role of Staff

It is very crucial to understand that the entire idea of OS, or human-machine integration is never to replace humans. It is to augment them, it is to make their time free so that they can put efforts into something that only they can do.

Here, in this case, it involves being present for the customers. Talking and building connections with the buyers. Since, they don’t need to spend time on systems to find the apparel, stock them, bill them, I believe they can be present to customers to give them a much better shopping experience which wasn’t possible otherwise.
